About Neo-Classical

In 1990, the troupe’s founder, Dr. Liu, Feng-Shueh retired from the position of President of the Preparatory Committee for the Chiang Kai- Shek Culture Center. Since then she has devoted all her energies to choreography and the development of the troupe. In 1991, Dr. Liu did a retrospective at the National Theater entitled【40 years of Contribution to Dance】, performing 《Nilpotent Group》, 《The Seance》, 《Circling》and《Document》. This event provided the group with additional exposure and marked a new high-point in their history.

Liu’s far-ranging endeavors have included the reconstruction of Tang dynasty (618-907) dances such as《The Emperor Destroys the Formations》, 《King of Lan Ling》,《The Eight Gods of Mount Kun Lun》, the Confucian dances of the 11th century-《The World Completely Reformed》and《Majesty Invests the Four Seas》, and the Ming dynasty ( 1368-1644 )《Dance of the People》. Dr. Liu’s reconstruction of these lost periods of classic dance are brought to life by the troupe on stage, giving modern audiences an opportunity to enrich their understanding of ancient China.

The work of reconstruction is arduous, yet creativity is even more exhausting. Dr. Liu has devoted her entire life to the principle expressed by the Chinese ancient poet Chu Yuan「The road I travel is long, with no end in sight; but I will traverse Heaven and Earth in my quest.」

At times, her choreography focuses on social issues, as in《Sacrifice of Snow》a critique of society and the legal system. Works such as《Modern People》,《Man Without Humanity》,《Confrontation》and《Short of Cash》, on the other hand, convey the unease and fear in the heart of modern society, while《Ts’ao-Pi and Chen-Mi》uses historical events and legend to explore the roots of man’s downfall: confrontation, jealousy and destruction.

Apart from her dances using traditional Chinese material as themes, Dr. Liu has also invested considerable energy into the fusion of broader creative sources. For example, she brought German composer Carl Orff’s concert oratorio《Carmina Burana》to the Taiwan Stage using a combination of dance, vocal and instrumnetal music. 《Subtlety in Ethnic Poundings》has as its inspiration aboriginal folk songs and dances, and transfers the spirituality, life, and respect for life of the aborigines to th estage. 《Black Hole》, at the other extreme, was inspired by new discoveries in astronomy.

The majority of her works, however, tend toward the abstract and explorations of the nature of dance, including 「movement」,「timing」and 「dynamics」

The Neo- Classic Dance Company’s dancer’s come from a variety of backgrounds. As a result, the company’s members bring to the stage expertise not only in dance, but also in psychology, visual arts, music, education, athletics, and linguistics. It is a mixture which produces sparks on stage.
