Wong, Ching-Ping

Consultant of Music

Dr. Ching-Ping Wong, one of the finest pipa (Chinese lute) soloists in the world today, learnt this instrument since his childhood. After graduated from National Taiwan University, he has been very active on both national and international circuits of performance in Chinese music. The many accolades he has received through the years culminated in the Chinese Literature Award of 1976 and the Ministry of Education Awards in 1978, 1980 and 1984, etc.

In 1974-1979, he served as the conductor of B.C.C. (Broadcasting Corporation of China) Chinese Classical Music Demonstration Orchestra and in 1979-1984, Taipei Municipal Chinese Classical Orchestra. In 1985-1989, he took up an invitation to teach Chinese music in Kingston Polytechnics in England and at the same period, he achieved a doctoral degree in the field of Chinese music granted by CNAA (Council of National Academic Awards). After returning to Taiwan, he has served as associated professor in National Institute of the Arts for two years and undertook the position as the director of Taipei Municipal Chinese Classical Orchestra since 1991.

In pipa playing, apart from his virtuous playing techniques, Dr. Wong manages to conjunct the practical skill with ancient Chinese philosophical theories of `YIN' and `YAN', the two contrasts and reciprocal force, through a live performance. Thus provides a refined quality in traditional instrumental playing. Through his performance one can easily appreciate the beauty of Chinese music, the subtle timbre of the instrument as well as the striking power, the dynamic and dramatic musical effects of ancient and contemporary pipa music.

In the recent decades, Dr. Wong has given numerous recitals in many parts of the world, including Asia, Europe and America, etc. In pipa composition, his works not only embrace the Confucian theme of benevolence, the Buddhist `Zen' and other Chinese sentiments, but also include some modern and contemporary idioms. In 1996, Dr. Wong has granted the National Arts Award--the most honorable award of his Country.
